I am having the same problem as others in this thread. My WD my passport is not recognized by my computer. Check disk claims the disk is 'working properly' [no yellow triangles] I have tried the fixes listed here. Control panel sees it, troubleshooting finds no problems - remove - reboot - uninstall - reinstall - update drivers - 'cckdsk/f' - purchased a new cable - etc. Right now it shows as Disk 1 unknown, not initialized. When I hit 'initialize disk' I still get the message 'cyclic redundancy check'. I am going around in circles. I only back up my info 2x per year, the disk is 80% or more empty and I keep it stored in it's original packaging so I doubt it is dusty. Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is basically a data verification method that computer uses to check the accuracy of data on the disks (hard disk drive, optical disks such as CD, DVD etc.) CRC detects accidental changes to raw data residing in the storage media. A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents. Have any other suggestions? I hate to lose all my music and family photos & family history info going back to the early 1900's. PS: I am using windows 7 and have no wish to upgrade higher. Has anyone access to the manual or an exploded view of the gearbox/engine connection for a BMC Commander engine & a Newage mechanical gearbox as there is an oil leak between the engine & gearbox, probably gearbox oil, but not sure how the units split apart, i.e do you remove the bell housing with the gearbox attached or just the gearbox from. Should be the last resort of all. Thanks for responding. Yes we have 2 desktops here and I have tried plugging it into both with the same results. I am waiting for my son to stop by one day and try plugging the drive into his laptop. Not sure what you mean by application to save files. When the external drive is showing, I just copy from the desktop to the Passport. Do not have any WD utilities on hand. I will have to check out the WD site deeper. When I went there, it sent me to forums like this one. Thanks for the warning about 3rd party. I almost downloaded something called 'Recuva' but didn't like one of the additional things I had to tap on. I purchased a new USB cable at my son's suggestion. It didn't help. The control panel on the desktop sees the My Passport is attached but is invisible elsewhere. As for damaged heads. This hard drive has not been plugged in very many times as I only update my info 2X a year. It has never done this before. As for spending money, before I would spend anywhere near $500 I would probably purchase a new hard drive and start over. Just burns my butt that the computer claims 'the device is working properly' but I can't get to it. Below-mentioned are the data error that occur during restoration process of backup file created with Veritas Backup Exec: • Error 0x17: Storage device or drive has encountered an error, while reading data from media • Error 0xe00084c7: A read or write error has occurred in backup file. Moreover, if the storage of file is tape based, then the possible reason behind this error occurrence is defect in read/write head part of the tape drive. Therefore, remove the defect by cleaning the tape drive, and try to continue your work. • Error 00000017 HEX: This is a write error, which occurs while performing writing operation on media. There are some more error code related to CRC and they are given below in screenshot: NOTE: Before proceeding further to troubleshoot the data error, firstly check the problems related to cables, termination, and other hardware devices. In addition, check whether the storage subsystem is functioning properly or not.
